One result of the first research can also be found at DRIVE: A transporter of the T2 series- the first electric VW-Bulli. The project was developed in cooperation with Bosch, Varta and RWE. The electric transporter was powered by a DC motor, which was located in the rear end of the car and delivered a continuous power of 16 kW (22 hp). Lead batteries located in the vehicle floor served as an energy source and weighed 850 kilograms – more than a beetle at the time. A strengthening of the underbody assembly and the chassis was thus necessary, which caused the T2 electric transporter to weigh about 2.2 tons. Volkswagen produced this T2 as a production model over several years with a total edition of approx. 120 pieces, available with different body variations.
