info@drive-volkswagen-group.comFor electric vehicle drivers and anyone who wants to become one: We explain the most important terms around the issue e-mobility – one new post every week.
The Combined Charging System (CCS) according to European and American standards allows charging with AC alternating current (socket or wallbox) as well as DC direct current (High Power Charging).
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is the name given to vehicles that run exclusively on battery power.
In addition to climate protection, compliance with social standards also plays a central role for Volkswagen when it comes to the resource requirements for e-mobility – especially in the responsible mining of Cobalt.
Decarbonisation refers to the conversion to an economic system that sustainably reduces or completely avoids the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Many countries around the world provide government incentives to buyers of electric vehicles. In Germany, this support is known as an Umweltbonus (environmental bonus), in the UK as a plug-in car grant, or in California as the California Vehicle Rebate Program (CVRP).
Volkswagen is consistently driving e-mobility forward. Volkswagen is working at full speed to convert its factories worldwide to e-production.
Green electricity is generated from renewable energy sources or environmentally friendly combined heat and power.
In order to make electromobility suitable for the long haul as well, the company IONITY, co-founded by Volkswagen, is currently setting up a Europe-wide network of fast-charging stations, so-called HPC (High Power Charging) stations, which offer a charging capacity of up to 350 kW.
With the ID. family Volkswagen is driving e-mobility forward more consistently and with greater commitment than almost any other car manufacturer.
Due to its high energy density, the lithium-ion battery has been the preferred energy storage device for Volkswagen e-models for years.
All ID. models are based on the Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB) system by Volkswagen.
Torque is an important quantity in engine construction, measured in Newton meters (Nm) and representing the force of the engine perpendicular to the distance formed by the lever arm.
The overall reach indicates how many kilometres an electric vehicle can cover with a single full battery charge.
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is a vehicle with a hybrid drive, i.e. two drivetrains. Today, these are mostly an electric motor and a combustion engine.
The shift towards electromobility and digitisation requires new competencies and skills. Volkswagen has therefore launched a major further training offensive.
Recuperation – also known as regenerative braking – is the recovery of the kinetic energy released during braking or thrust operation.
The solid-state battery cell technology is regarded as the most promising approach to electromobility of the future.
The term Tank-to-Wheel (TTW) refers to a subrange in the energy chain of a vehicle that extends from the point at which energy is absorbed (charging point; fuel pump) to discharge (being on the move).
Concepts that use batteries of e-vehicles as intermediate storage and buffers for the entire power grid are called Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G).
A wallbox is a charging station for private households. Wallboxes can be used with a higher charging capacity (11-22 kW) with more convenience than conventional household sockets.
A Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) is an electric car that runs completely CO2-free in Tank-to-Wheel mode.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data are determined in accordance with the measurement procedures prescribed by law. 1 January 2022, the WLTP test cycle completely replaced the NEDC test cycle and therefore no NEDC values are available for new type approved vehicles after that date. This information does not refer to a single vehicle and is not part of the offer but is only intended for comparison between different types of vehicles. Additional equipment and accessories (additional components, tyre formats, etc.) can alter relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, affecting the vehicle’s fuel consumption, power consumption, CO₂ emissions and driving performance values in addition to weather and traffic conditions and individual driving behavior. Due to more realistic testing conditions, fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions measured according to WLTP will in many cases be higher than the values measured according to NEDC. As a result, the taxation of vehicles may change accordingly as of 1 September 2018. For further information on the differences between WLTP and NEDC, please visit www.volkswagen.de/wltp. Further information on official fuel consumption data and official specific CO₂ emissions for new passenger cars can be found in the “Guide to fuel economy, CO₂ emissions and power consumption for new passenger car models”, which is available free of charge from all sales dealerships and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, D-73760 Ostfildern, Germany and at www.dat.de/co2.
